With the expansion of the European standard gauge to Barcelona, it is no longer necessary to change axles at the Spanish border. The southeast route takes links Germany and western Europe with southeastern Europe. This important route from southern Germany to Istanbul and the major international container terminal at Halkali also connects Vienna (Austria) and Oradea (Romania).
